Nair Service Society College (NSS College)
The N.S.S College, Cherthala, owes its origin to the hardwork and patronage of the Nair Service Society, an educational agency in Kerala and to the initiative and vision of its founder the late Mannathu Padmanabhan.
The foundation stone of the college building was laid by Sri.Parameswara Panicker of the Manthanathu family on 16th April 1964. Using the fund collected as donations from the local people, a small building was constructed and it was inaugurated on 15th July 1964 by the then president of the Nair Service Society, Sri.Kalathil Velayudhan Nair. With only 359 students 16 teachers and 12 non-teaching staff, the college started functioning as a junior college under the first Principal Prof.N.Govindan Unni.
The college was upgraded in the year 1968 with the introduction of 6 UG courses B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and B.A. English, Economics and History. B.Com. was introduced in 1980 followed by B.Sc. Botany in 1981. The first P.G. Course, M.Sc. Mathematics, was launched in the academic year 1995-96. B.A. Malayalam course was introduced in 1998 followed by the second PG course, M.A. Economics in the year 1999-2000. The first restructured course B.Sc. Environment and water management came into being in 2001. Now the college has 10 UG courses and 2 PG courses. With tremendous potential for further expansion, the college is on its path of progress on a very fast pace.
The college has a very active NCC Unit, three socially committed National Service Scheme Units and a very efficient Sports and Arts wing, the students of this premier institution, situated in an economically and educationally backward area, had won laurels in the University examinations, Youth Festivals and Athletic meets.
